Περίληψη

This talk offers an overview of the study of performed language; that is, scripted fictional language as typically found in pop cultural artifacts. It starts from the observation that while performed language was traditionally sidelined in linguistics due to its alleged “inauthentic” nature, it has gradually been acknowledged as a regular part of everyday language use and thus has been normalized in linguistic study. It is argued that, in addition to its social relevance, performed language as an instance of strategic linguistic design is an object worth of serious linguistic engagement as it (i) is characterized by highly specific circumstances of production (e.g. “written-to-be-spoken”, “written-to-be-sung”) and reception and (ii) has the potential for affective engagement. After a brief historical review of the fate of the study of performed language and an outline of the connection to the broader emerging area of pop cultural linguistics, selected case studies on the language of lyrics and of telecinematic language are presented.
